Housing Coop
Rear Extensions

The proposal is to refit and extend an property located in North London in order to enhance its use as a large collectively-owned residential household about to welcome children in the very near future.

The house located in North London was in need of urgent repair, with a leaking roof. The works were an opportunity to upgrade the existing fabric while remaining in keeping with the existing.

The new extensions are two simple and discreet volumes located at the back of the house within the profile of the existing roofs. Both extensions, the loft extension and the dormer extension are invisible from the street.

The proposal extends the number of bedrooms from 4 to 6. The new dormer accomodates a new study and new bathroom, while the loft extension includes two new bedrooms. The existing rear gabled roof was removed and replaced by a flat roof, while two new rooflights were inserted within the existing front roof.

The rear extensions were built using timber framing, new insulation and where possible retaining the existing redland ribbed tiles. All damaged tiles were replaced using salvaged tiles from the existing rear pitch. To reduce cost the new external windows and velux are UPVC double glazed and frosted where required, all downpipes and guttering are black UPVC.
